He studied with his father, who was a band conductor in Reus, and later at the Acadèmia Ainaud in Barcelona. Thanks to a scholarship of Barcelona's city council, he was able to study in Royal Conservatory of Brussels under Matthieu Crickboom. In 1914 he moved to London, where founded Quartet Brosa (1925-1938) in 1924 and taught at the Royal College of Music. He was involved with the BBC and took part in the Festival of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM) in 1928. Remarkable performances by him include chamber and symphonic music of composers such as Schönberg, Bartók, Stravinski, Hindemith, Prokófiev, Milhaud, Williams, and Gerhard, with whom he had a great friendship. In 1936, he premiered Britten's Suite for Violin and Piano, accompanied by the composer himself, and in 1940, he premiered and recorded his Violin Concerto in New York. He also promoted cultural exchanges between England and Catalonia in his regular visits to Tossa de Mar.
