Biografía

Organist, Kapellmeister and conductor

Son of an artisan, he studied at the cathedral of Barcelona with Queralt (composition) and Baguer (organ). He succeeded Baguer as organist in 1808 and Queralt as a Kapellmeister in 1827, post he held until his dead. At the request of Ramon Carnicer he took the position of director of Teatre de la Santa Creu from 1830. He also founded a music school at his home, considered one of the most prestigious in Barcelona. His output includes a great amount of sacred music, some oratorios, operatic fragments and orchestral music. He obtained a great recognition as an organist (especially for his fugue improvisation skills), composer and teacher.
