Biografía

He studied violin with J. Vilanova, harmony and counterpoint with Arbós and Saldoni and later composition with Ramon Vilanova. His first compositions include sacred music such as the kyries of the Missa Pastoril of Vilanova. In 1831 he moved to Milan to study with Mercadante. He travelled across Europe with him and met composers such as Rossini, Donizetti, Meyerbeer, Auber, Boildieu and Caraffa. His first opera Odio e Amore was premiered in 1837 at La Scala in Milan and was performed in other Italian cities. 

In Barcelona he was professor of composition, singing teacher, director of the Liceu Conservatory and conductor of the Gran Teatre del Liceu orchestra. He wrote handbooks of solfège and piano. His cantata Il regio imeneo was performed for the inauguration of the new Liceu building in 1847, and the opera Editta di Belcourt achieved great success in its premiere in 1874.
