He studied law at the university alongside singing at the Conservatori Municipal de Barcelona. Under the protection of the soprano Hariclea Darclée, he debutted in 1895 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu with Les Huguenots. After a training in Italy, he performed at the Teatro Real in Madrid and on European and American stages.

In 1901 he made his debut on the stage of the New York Metropolitan where he performed regularly until 1920. He sung in over 300 performances and coincided with Toscanini, Caruso, Ruffo, Chaliapin and Bori. From 1920 to 1921 he toured Cuba and returned to New York in 1926.

In the late 1920s he began a stint as a film actor in Hollywood, debuting with Gloria Swansona's The Love of Sunya (1927) and starring in about twenty films. In 1932 he lost his sight due to an accident, left the stage and founded a singing academy in Hollywood where he perfected the acting technique of singers, actors and actresses such as Renato Zanelli, Hedy Lamarr and Deanna Durbin.

In 1951 he retired in Barcelona.
